Internal parasites include heartworms, hookworms, and roundworms that live inside their host. External parasites include fleas, ticks, and mites. These parasites not only cause discomfort, scratching, and skin infection, but can also transmit serious diseases.
Certain parasites (both internal and external) are zoonotic which means they can be transmitted from your pet to you or your family. With regular examinations and testing, we can help protect your pet and family against both types of parasites. If your pet has frequent contact with other animals at a groomer or boarding facility, they should be checked more often to decrease the risk of infection. The Resort for Pets (our on-property boarding facility) requires an annual intestinal parasite screen in order to stay with us. Annual heartworm testing is important in this area for your pet’s health and to continue refilling heartworm prevention. Our heartworm test will also screen for the three most common tick borne diseases: ehrlichiosis, anaplasmosis and lyme disease.
Our veterinarians can work with you to develop a preventative program which includes recommendations for a parasite testing schedule, ways to prevent and control parasites in your home, and discuss possible treatment options in the event your dog or cat becomes infected with parasites. Our knowledgeable veterinarians and staff members are here to provide you with an inclusive parasite control program that will treat your pet and prevent parasites from coming back in the future.
